Loved Ones

As much as cemeteries were created to keep dead bodies, I believe that when a person dies, their spirit (or soul) goes to heaven (or hell). The body is just a shell; a covering to protect the soul. So, I feel like visiting them is not really doing anything, you know? I don’t feel closer to my loved ones in a cemetery as opposed to being in my bedroom with the door closed.
My sister is so insistent on visiting my grandmother’s grave but she’s all the way in the Bronx. A 2 hour ride on train or Uber. Then walking to locate where she is buried takes about half an hour. Then to go eat. That’s about 6 hours. It’s tiring. Plus, I used to love going to the Bronx to visit all of my loved ones (boyfriends/lovers), but I don’t anymore, so it brings back bittersweet memories. Also, I don’t want to spend so much time away from my mom. There’s many factors at play here.
Then my sister wants to make sure we don’t bring “anything” back with us. Then why go to a cemetery with dead bodies and possible souls lingering around? My belief in God is strong and I trust that He and his angels will protect me.
I can honor, pray, talk and miss my grandma from the comfort of my bed because her spirit is in heaven and most importantly, she lives in my heart and mind.
